Corrosion resistance study of 439L ferritic stainless steel subjected to high temperature variation

Automobile production plants have advanced the utilization of stainless steel alloys for exhaust mufflers due to corrosion failures associated with their operating lifespan and conditions application. Corrosion vulnerability as received heat treated (500oC 1000oC) 439 L ferritic in 3.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte at 0% 6% NaCl concentration was evaluated potentiodynamic polarization, potentiostatic measurement, open circuit potential optical microscopy characterization. Potentiodynamic polarization results show treatment improved general resistance steel. Heat 500°C displayed lowest rate trailed by 1000°C. However, measurement shows that decreases localized deterioration from inspection metastable pitting current passivation values. Results increases thermodynamic tendency while improving its resistance. Optical images as-receive steels presence numerous pits along grain boundaries. extent is significantly higher as-received
